The First ASL Symposium on the Sciences in Lebanon gathered leading scientists,
educators, policy makers and administrators on November 6 and 7, 2009, at the Beirut Crowne Plaza Hotel, to define the challenges and future directions for scientific research and education in Lebanon. The symposium opened with addresses by His Excellency the Lebanese Prime Minister, Mr. Fouad Siniora, and Academicians Professors Edgar Choueiri and Georges Bahr. A number of invited speakers then reviewed some of the challenges facing the development of scientific research and education in Lebanon. The rest of the symposium consisted of a series of parallel working sessions and panel discussions aimed at drafting a set of concrete recommendations and directions for developing the sciences in Lebanon.
ASL Academician Dr. Charles Elachi, Director of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, gave a public lecture on the evening of Friday November 7, 2009
Registration for the symposium was free and by invitation only.
The discussions at the symposium were recorded then transcribed into a document that is presently serving as the basis of a detailed ASL study and overview of the status of the sciences in Lebanon. This study, along with the recommendations derived from it, will published this year by the ASL and will be availble for download from the Publications Section of this website.

FLAS held Dinner Gala to benefit the ASL on June 25, 2009
The "Friends of the Lebanese Academy of Sciences" (FLAS), a non-profit foundation in the US dedicated to the support of the Lebanese Academy of Sciences (ASL), held a black tie gala dinner at the Harvard Club of New York on June 25th, to benefit the ASL and the cause of growing scientific education and research in Lebanon.
The gala was a historic event gathering some of the most forward-looking Lebanese, Lebanese-Americans, Arab-Americans and others who care about the cause of having world-class scientific research and education in the Middle East.
The evening featured ASL Academician and Director of NASA-JPL, Dr. Charles Elachi, who made a spectacular presentation on the inter-planetary missions launched by his institution. His talk was titled "Voyage & Exploration: from the Phoenicians to the Frontier of Space."
