First ASL Symposium on the Sciences in Lebanon to be held in Beirut on November 6-7, 2009.
The First ASL Symposium on the Sciences in Lebanon will gather leading scientists,
educators, policy makers and administrators on November 6 and 7, 2009, at the Beirut Crowne Plaza Hotel, to define the challenges and future directions for scientific research and education in Lebanon. The symposium will open with addresses by His Excellency the Lebanese Prime Minister, Mr. Fouad Siniora, and Academicians Professor Edgar Choueiri and Sir Michael Atiyah. Invited speakers will then review some of the challenges facing the development of scientific research and education in Lebanon. The rest of the symposium will consist of a series of parallel working sessions and panel discussions aimed at drafting a set of concrete recommendations and directions for developing the sciences in Lebanon.
ASL Academician Dr. Charles Elachi, Director of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, will give a public lecture on the evening of Friday November 7.

Haddadin, Ghaddar and Badr elected to the Lebanese Academy of Sciences (October 27, 2009):

Academician Mona Nemer knighted by President Sarkozy of France (April 23, 2009):
Professor Mona Nemer, Vice-President of the ASL and Vice-President, Research at the University of Ottawa was given the insigna of the Knight of the Order of Merit (Chevalier de l'Ordre du Mérite) by H.E. Mr. François Delattre, Ambassador of France to Canada, on behalf of President Nicolas Sarkozy of France in a ceremony held on April 23, 2009 at the Residence de France in Ottawa, Canada.
